Project: Chihuly Inspired Sculptures

Students loved this project! After enjoying the amazing work of Dale Chihuly, students set out to make their own version.  

Steps:
Color 2 sheets of shrink film using permanent markers
Cut into a variety of shape/size pieces
Use the heat gun to shrink pieces
Glue pieces together in a unique way
Paint a base
Affix sculpture to the base

I am lucky enough to have wonderful students at Hester who love to go above and beyond the call of duty.  I co-sponsor yearbook club with Ms. Ryan and we have a wonderful committed group this year that is working on creating a FABULOUS yearbook.  As our official yearbook photographer, Sebastian Portillo spent two games before winter break capturing these action-packed shots of the Hester Boys Basketball Team and I couldn't wait for the yearbook release to share these photos.  Check it out!  Thanks Sebastian for your awesome hard work!

IAEA Conference 2017

One of my favorite times of year is the annual Illinois Art Education Association fall conference because I get to teach and learn with hundreds of art teachers from around the state.  This year I presented two workshops: Recyclables to Magnificent Papier Mache Sculptures and Involving Students in the Assessment Process.  Both sessions went great and had a positive response from the participants. In the papier mache workshop I explained to teachers how I approach teaching papier mache at Hester and then let teachers dive right in to create their own sculptures.  Here are a few photos from that session: After lunch I attended a session from an amazing teacher, Michelle Lynn from Downers Grove South High School (who is one of the teachers I student taught with) on using blogs and tumblr to share, critique and assess student artwork. Memory Project: Colombia Portraits

Hester art club students were stretching their global awareness by creating portraits for children in Colombia who are living in orphanages.  The students wanted to use their artwork to bring a smile to other's who are living in difficult circumstances.  It is important to note that these children are well cared for. The Memory Project has been around since 2004 and has delivered 90,000 portraits to children in 42 countries!  The wonderful team at the Memory Project makes the process easy for teachers and students.  In a few weeks we will receive a video that captures the delivery of the portraits - it always brings tears to my eyes the joy we are able to help create!  Check out this wonderful organization HERE .
